Fighting For Consumer Justice

An Expensive Month

Today we got an Xcel bill for $193.86 which is insanely high for this time of year for us. Last year we were paying $84.28.  Xcel’s evil plan to destroy the customers through their monopoly on electricity and gas for our state is unbelievable.  The only difference between this year and last year was that we were convinced to sign up for the fixed monthly plan when we asked for the budget plan.  I am so upset that our government allows this company to continue harming its customers.

Xcel’s $1.7M Lobbying

Today I got another Xcel bill for the fixed monthly plan that I was convinced to sign up for.  I thought I would do a bit of reading on Xcel in the news and I came across an article in Forbes about Xcel spending nearly $1.7 Million lobbying congress.

I am sure this corporation has nothing but the best intentions as it bribes congress, perhaps it is looking for ways it can help reduce the high cost of heating in Minnesota.  Or maybe it is trying to find new ways to soak its customers and make even more money while congress looks the other way.

Here is a link to the article on Xcel’s Congressional Lobbying

Xcel Demands more Money

Xcel has decided that it is expensive to create energy for its customers, so they would like to add a surcharge.  I would think that given the amount of money Xcel has already stolen from it’s customer’s through this Fixed Rate Gas plan, they would have enough money to fund itself for a while.

Here is the news on Xcel’s robbery of customers.

Many of you do not know the whole story of what occurred between me and Xcel Energy.  This post is meant to provide a summary of what transpired.

November 2006 – My wife and I had a financial summit with our landlord to discuss the energy bill and we realized that we need to enroll in a budget plan to stabilize our heating costs.  Winter is expensive in Minnesota and summer is usually cheap.  Xcel offers a plan that allows for averaging of monthly bills (more…)

I am mailing in a complaint about Xcel’s Fixed Monthly Payment Scam to the Lori Swanson, Attorney General of Minnesota.  If anyone else in Minnesota is having an issue with the Xcel’s Fixed Monthly Payment scam, I encourage you to also complete a Consumer Complaint Form.

E-mail to Xcel Energy

I am sending the following information to Xcel Energy via their Contact Us Form. I will keep you updated on my progress.
In November I contacted Xcel to be registered for the Budget plan for my energy bill. An agent informed me to fill out some information she would have sent to me. We filled out this information and just recently have discovered that instead of the budget plan we were accidentally signed up for the fixed monthly payment plan. Many customer service agents I have spoken with have been unable to distinguish between the high risk fixed monthly payment plan and the sensible budget plan, so it is quite easy to see how this mistake occurred on your end. I would appreciate if this error could be resolved. If it is not possible to resolve this by e-mail or phone, I would very much enjoy a meeting at your central office in Minneapolis.
Thank you for your time,
Jason DeBoer Moran

Two days ago in my efforts to learn more about the differences between the fixed monthly payment high risk plan versus the budget plan, I contacted Minnesota Public Radio. They interviewed me and have the story posted on their website.

Xcel Energy’s Fixed Price Plan

I learned three days ago that instead of being signed up for the Budget Plan as I requested in November, I instead signed up for the Fixed Monthly Price Plan.  I have been contacting Xcel frequently regarding this issue and have reached no satisfactory resolution.  This will be a log of my attempts to get this situation resolved.
